SURF+ Installation Guide

Overview

The installation of SURF+ is very straightforward if you follow the instructions below. There are a few steps to complete before you can enjoy the SURF+ hotkey experience. Once you've got through these steps then it becomes very easy to use SURF+ on a daily basis. To start SURF+ there are then only 3 steps:
  • Open ICEM Surf
  • Start SURF+
  • Press START
Then you can use the hotkeys that you've defined. Once SURF+ is running then it is very much "plug and forget".

If you have any problems with the installation then please let me know and I'll do my very best to help.

Step 1: Download software

Download the Release.zip folder.
Create a folder called SURF-PLUS in a folder of your choice.
Unzip Release.zip to here.

SURF+ needs a licence file in order to work. If you've downloaded the software then we will send you a licence for your username.

Step 2: Set Up Program

Inside the Release folder you'll find a file called SURF_PLUS V0.0 2018.exe or similar. This is the main program.

Use the RH mouse to Pin this file to the Taskbar, Startbar or Send to Desktop as you prefer.

Step 3: User Files

Copy the files in the folder HOTKEYS to your home folder %USERPROFILE%.

These are: hotkey-V2.csv, hotkey-V2-EMPTY.csv, hotkey-V2-DEFAULT.csv and userMenu.csv

Step 4: Start SURF+

Activate SURF+ from the icon (taskbar, start menu or desktop).

Step 5: Edit Hotkeys

From the SURF+ menu (shown below) pick Edit-Hotkeys to open the Hot Key Editor.

In the Hot Key Editor (below) firstly edit or browse for the ICEM defaults path where the file local_defaults.txt is found. You may need to search the system for this file if you don’t know where this folder is or ask your IT Department (by default it would be the folder "C:\Users\<USER-NAME>\AppData\Roaming\DassaultSystemes\ICEMSurf". Substitute your user name for the "<USER-NAME>". If you're on a large network then it's highly unlikely it would be here though. In the example below the user is Admin. ).

Optionally you might want to edit the UI Scaling to a different value (this is the same as the value in the ICEM Windows-Preferences-Style menu). Most users will want to leave it as 100%. The Layout can be set to RH or LH. This is the Screen layout position as defined in the ICEM Surf menu Windows-Preferences-Style.

Step 6: Testing the Installation

In ICEM Surf 2018 Dassault Systemes enhanced the User Preferences by letting the user save & restore different user preferences. So the procedure for setting up SURF+ is slightly different depending on whether you're using a pre-2018 version of ICEM Surf or a later version.

Using Pre-V2018 ICEM Surf

  • In Windows-Preferences, Save User Preferences. This creates the private_defaults.txt file.
  • (It's a good idea to backup this private_defaults.txt file as private_defaults_ORIGINAL.txt)
  • Open ICEM Surf
  • Start SURF+ by picking the icon
  • Press START. This updates the private_defaults.txt file
  • In Windows-Preferences, Restore User Preferences. This reads the updated private_defaults.txt
  • Test by pressing z in the graphics window. This should access zoom. Pressing s, for instance, should shade the model.

Using V2018 (or later) of  ICEM Surf

  • In Windows-Preferences, pick User Preferences.
  • Select Editor...
  • Save a new user preference variant SURF_PLUS
  • This creates a file called private_defaults_SURF_PLUS.txt
  • (Optionally you can save a new user preference variant ORIGINAL to backup your original settings)
  • Open ICEM Surf
  • Start SURF+ by picking the icon
  • Press START. This updates the private_defaults_SURF_PLUS.txt
  • In Windows-Preferences, pick User Preferences and then choose SURF_PLUS
  • Test by pressing z in the graphics window. This should access zoom. Pressing s, for instance, should shade the model.
